Sustainability - Transportation, Parking and Fleet Services

TAPS SustainabilityTransportation, Parking and Fleet Services is committed to the University of California's vision concerning sustainability. We have short- and long-term goals that will incorporate alternative means of transportation to, from and within campus in an effort to reduce GHG emissions. We will also be focusing on upgrading our fleet to low- or zero-emission vehicles and work to keep that fleet properly maintained to further this department’s sustainability goals.

Current Initiatives

  1. Two compressed natural gas cars for campus business and loaners
  2. A fleet of battery operated golf carts - some solar powered 
  3. Electric carts for parking enforcement
  4. Compressed natural gas and clean diesel buses for mass transit
  5. Zimride rideshare and commute program
  6. Consistent maintenance of fleet vehicles for cleaner operation and maximization of fuel economy
  7. Electric trams
  8. Electric pressure washers
  9. Battery recycling
  10. Cardboard recycling
  11. Carpool permits offered at a discount rate for prime parking spaces to promote ridesharing
  12. Blue recycling waste bins at department desks
  13. Increase in bicycle carrying capacity on mass transit
  14. Sustainable fleet washing operation through the use of Micro fiber towels
  15. Annual surveying of campus community commuting patterns

What We are Working on

  1. Motorcycle training to encourage the use of cycles and scooters to lessen carbon emissions and parking congestion
  2. Connect by Hertz — UC-wide car sharing application
  3. Zimride rideshare and commute program
  4. Bicycle program
  5. CNG refilling stations on campus
  6. Vanpool program (currently in process of developing a program through VPSI)
  7. Electric car charging stations in new North Bowl Parking Lot (fall 2011)
  8. Presentations at new employee orientations

Future Goals

  1. Increase the number of hybrid and/or battery fleet of autos
  2. Reduction of Single Occupancy Vehicle (SOV)/Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) rates through aggressive marketing and development of incentives to participate in alternative transportation programs (i.e. message boards, departmental competitions)
  3. Adopt a clean-fleet procurement policy
  4. Standardize ordering cycles
  5. Zero-emission vehicle incentives
  6. Research grants to help fund growth of alternative transportation programs
